NHL Playoffs

It has been great watching the NHL playoffs the last two days even though the pens played poorly in game one of their series. Playoff hockey is the best to watch and it made me wonder if and when the NHL would be picked back up by ESPN. With games being on versus a lot not all the fans are able to watch the games from their home and hopefully that will change in the near future. If hockey was on ESPN more people would watch it and realize how entertaining it is to watch and what great athletes hockey players are. Things have been improving for the NHL since the lockout but they still have a long way to go in order to compete with the other sports but hopefully sometime soon we'll all be able to watch our favorite team on a major network.

Sex Ed in health class

Sexual education in health class has been a controversial topic in our country for awhile. There are people who believe that abstinence is the only topic that should be covered with todays young students instead of teaching them about abstinence and safe sex. It is not realistic to think that no students out there are going to be sexual active that is why is it important to educate students about sex but also include abstinence in this lesson. This is a hot topic in the health field and religion is often tied into as well which causes problems in certain school districts. As future health teachers we may be at a school district where you are only allowed to teach about abstinence and nothing else. I know for me personally I would not want to have to leave out safe sex because its something the students must be educated about and I would want to include along with abstinence.

golf and leisure games in physical education

Golf is a game that someone can play and enjoy for their entire life although it can be expensive, it can be valuable for students to learn at a young age. It was not part of my physical education during K-12 however I think students could benefit from learning how to play various leisure sports in physical education class. Not all students are going to enjoy the main core sports that are often part of the curriculum and easy to get involved with outside of school. Introducing students to leisure games can help keep them active for a very long time if students find something they really enjoy doing. I think it would be very beneficial for students to learn these games early on in school.

Grading on skill testing in PE

This a topic that comes up in our classes as well as in many different school districts around the country. I believe that students should be graded on the effort and improvement rather than just their individual score. Skill testing is a time when students can feel very uncomfortable around their classmates and it is on the teacher to make sure that all students are comfortable during these tests in class. Teachers should make sure to be private with each individual's score and really emphasis how big of a role effort and improvement play in the student's grades. Physical education class is a place where it is easier for students to feel isolated in front of their classmates and it is up to the teachers to ensure this does not happen so that all students enjoy class more.
